Class 4 Tennis

Last week Class 4 began their lessons at Queen’s Sports Club in Halifax. The lessons will run on Thursday afternoons until half-term. Class 3 are also learning to play tennis. They are visiting Park Tennis Club in Hove Edge on Friday afternoons.

Providing imag0774these lessons is possible because of the Sports Premium Funding which we receive. This covers the cost of coaching and court hire with parents’ continued support of the 100 Club covering transport costs.

With the temperature soaring our coach, Simon, decided to move our lesson to the indoor courts. As this was the first session, Simon, focussed on the forehand. Next week we will begin learning the more difficult backhand stroke.

Tour de Yorkshire Celebrations

To celebrate the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire, schools in the East Calderdale Learning Cluster took part in a number of events which were brilliantly organised by Mr Gentry at St Chad’s.

Events began early in the day with a peloton of riders representing schools in our cluster arriving in Shibden. Later pupils from Salterlee visited a number of schools in our cluster to enjoy a superb display of stunt riding.

cycle displayThe day concluded with pupils in Class 4 taking part in a series of cycle races at St Chad’s. There were expertly organised by a former Olympic cyclist.

Special thanks go not only to Mr Gentry and the children of St Chad’s who kindly lent us their bikes, but also to everyone at Carr Green, St John’s Clifton and Cliffe Hill who enabled our pupils to enjoy the displays with them as our playground was too small. It was a terrific way to celebrate the start of Yorkshire’s biggest sporting event.

Relay Team Win Medals in National Swimming Heats

Following their success at last year’s small schools’ gala we decided that some of our elite swimmers needed an extra challenge.  To do this we entered a mixed team in the freestyle and medley relays at the National Schools’ Swimming Championships (Yorkshire Heats) at the Galpharm Stadium in Huddersfield.

Swimming RelayWith the added competition of teams coming from as far away as Newcastle and Hull, our swimmers rose superbly to the challenge winning medals by finishing fourth in both events.

Their achievements are all the more impressive considering that three of our team are still in Year 5.  This gives them the chance to improve on their position next year. Finishing in the top three will  see them representing Yorkshire in the National Finals.

Champion Gymnasts

IMG_0196We are proud to announce that our gymnastics team delivered a championship winning performance at the Calderdale Schools’ Gymnastics Annual Competition last week.

With over 20 teams taking part the standard was extremely high with competitors facing the added pressure of performing in front of a large crowd at North Bridge Leisure Centre.

Delivering a slick routine choreographed by Miss Green, the girls rose to the challenge wowing not only the crowd, but also the judges who awarded them first prize in their category.

Special thanks must also go to the parents of Salterlee with Justine Metcalfe very kindly preparing our teams hair. Justine’s immaculate styling combined beautifully with the new leotards, generously provided by FOSS, to add the finishing touches to what was an impressive and professional team effort.

Well done to everyone involved. We are already looking forward to next year’s event as we’re convinced that some of our boys are also really talented gymnasts.
